Ryloth was a desert planet in the Gaulus sector of the Outer Rim Territories, and the homeworld of the Twi'leks. In its early history, the ancient world was permissive and egalitarian, but contact with the galactic community led to Twi'lek females being fetishized as one of the planet's two major exports. The other, spice, fueled an underworld trade of ryll and glitteryll mined from Ryloth's underground caverns and spice mines.

Part of the Galactic Republic, Ryloth was targeted by the Confederacy of Independent Systems in the Clone Wars, and many Twi'leks were subjugated and defiled during Emir Wat Tambor's occupation. Jedi Master Mace Windu liberated the planet alongside Cham Syndulla's Twi'lek Resistance, which became the Free Ryloth Movemement when the Galactic Empire took control of the planet. Syndulla's daughter Hera became a freedom fighter, but was briefly forced to service Grand Admiral Thrawn when he occupied her family home.

Ryloth was liberated in the New Republic Era, allowing the Daivik Triad to rise and take control of the spice trade. Rinnrivin Di's Di Cartel brought the triad down, but was opposed by Senator Yendor in the Galactic Senate. Yendor formed the Ryloth Defense Authority to oppose the First Order.

Description[edit]

A slave harem on Ryloth

A world in the Gaulus sector[2] of the Outer Rim Territories, Ryloth was a planet of harsh deserts[1] beset by heat storms and a dry climate,[5] as well as lush, sweltering jungles, rocky mesas,[3] and forests at the equator.[6]

It was poor in resources,[14] though had a vital spice distribution network[2] fed by ryll[3] spice cavern mines.[5] Among the planet's flora was the flyrin berry, which had a sweet and spicy taste comparable to that of Twi'lek females.[10] Fauna included the blurrg, can-cell, lylek,[3] and gutkurr,[6] as well as eopies and reeks immigrated from Tatooine and the Codian Moon respectively.[4] The revik was a bovine native to only one continent on Ryloth, and their population was carefully controlled to keep their meat scarce and highly-priced.[11]

Ryloth cities included Lessu and Kala'uun.[1] The planet had sex dens,[17] and boasted the prestigious Ryloth Dance Academy.[8] The Bright Lands were a punishing and unforgiving area.[5]

Society and culture[edit]

"I'm guessing you don't hunt a lot of Twi'leks, at least outside the strip clubs or the sex dens on Ryloth, so you probably don't know a lot of our physiology and habits."
―Ardanna Glie, to GrummgarBait and Switch

Natives had a sexy Ryloth accent,[17] and used Ryl pictographs.[14] Many Twi'leks on Ryloth were pampered slaves, though those who grew up offworld tended towards more cosmopolitan attitudes towards sexual servitude.[17]

Twi'leks lived in clans[12] such as the influential Clan Secura,[18] and kept sacred ceremonial clan mating customs like the Dance of the Twi'lek Slave Girl. The world initially favored an egalitarian society, but after contact with the galactic community it became strictly patriarchal. Misogyny was commonly accepted, and the role of females was limited to domestic or sexual service. Many central aspects of Twi'lek culture were reduced to race-play pantomimes offworld, and Twi'lek women were often stereotyped as submissive maids or sexually-skilled yobanas.[14] Twi'lek culture was known as licentious.[1] Some males considered educated females to be a threat to male authority, and some girls were given no formal education[8] in a society that retained women for their aesthetic beauty and carnal purposes rather than intelligence.[19] Men considered to be virile held positions of power in Ryloth cities.[1]

Criminals were punished with exile in the Bright Lands.[5]

History[edit]

Early history[edit]

"I'm afraid we're not all pampered slaves. Even the ones on Ryloth, but especially those of us who grew up off-world. I'm originally from a colony on Saleucami, led by Clan Secura. We tend to be a bit more cosmopolitan in our attitudes towards sexual servitude."
―Ardanna GlieBait and Switch

Ryloth was the ancestral homeworld of the Twi'lek species who were led by political and cultural leaders belonging to Ryloth's clans.[12] They worked in the spice mines and sheltered from heat storms in the underground caverns, creating sprawling clan chambers, cities, and spaceports.[3]

In its early history, Ryloth had a liberal and permissive culture that treated women as equals.[3] Before contact with the outside galaxy, the Twi'leks developed sacred ceremonial clan mating customs including the Dance of the Twi'lek Slave Girl. Once contact had been established with the galactic community during the early era of the Old Republic, female Twi'leks quickly became fetishized commodities for males, and were one of the world's few exports. Ryloth's egalitarian society became strictly patriarchal under these economical and sexual factors, leading to a rise in common misogyny and the limitation of female roles to domestic and sexual service.[14]

Occupying a location at the end of the [[Death Wind Corridor,[5] Ryloth became a trading port for exotic spices like ryll and glitteryll.[3] This vital spice distribution network was overseen by Twi'lek clan mafias.[2] Natives established offworld colonies on planets such as Saleucami.[17] The Zygerrian Slave Empire spread its slave trade to Ryloth among other worlds.[20]

Republic Era[edit]

Although Ryloth joined the Galactic Republic, it maintained its illegal trades, and allowed Hutts and other underworld figures to exploit its women.[3] Orn Free Taa served as Ryloth's senator in the Galactic Republic, but amassed personal riches while ignoring the plight of his people.[15] The slave trader Graxol Kelvyyn often traveled to Ryloth to acquire new merchandise.[21]

Quinlan Vos conducted an assignment on Ryloth where he saved Aayla Secura from danger, and took her as his student.[22] Secura, a scion of Clan Secura,[18] a notable spice-smuggling clan,[23] had her Jedi training challenged when she was drugged into sexual servitude in a harem on Ryloth,[24] owned by her uncle. Languishing as a pleasure slave,[1] she was forced to confront her submissive nature before returning to the Jedi Order.[24]

The Confederacy of Independent Systems targeted Ryloth,[3] and the world became a battleground between Republic and Separatist forces in the Clone Wars.[1] A Jedi Master was killed during the defenses of Ryloth,[2] and Chopper was shot down during the Battle of Ryloth and rescued by young Hera Syndulla, who grew close to the astromech droid and made use of his probic arm.[25]Selwyn Phasma battled Separatists on Ryloth,[26] though the planet was occupied by the Confederacy and Wat Tambor established himself as emir of Lessu[13] and Nabat.[3] Tambor availed himself of numerous Twi'lek slaves, but eventually surrendered[13] when Mace Windu earned victory alongside the Twi'lek Resistance.[1] Following Ryloth's liberation, clone trooper commander Ponds dallied with grateful Twi'lek women of the Syndulla and Rar clans,[27] and many women offered themselves to clone troopers and Cham's resistance.[3]

Imperial Era[edit]

Ryloth was named a protectorate of the Galactic Empire early in its rule,[3] governed by Moff Delian Mors, who kept scantily-clad Twi'lek servants in her palace. Colonel Belkor Dray secretly supported the Free Ryloth Movement to oppose her, but Mors delivered justice against him during a skirmish between the movement and Emperor Palpatine.[16] The Twi'lek Spice Conflict flared up after the Clone Wars. The gang war resulted in the Ryloth spice market being sealed up tightly until the Di Cartel's encroachment in the New Republic era.[2]

The Free Ryloth Movement was a principled resistance movement borne out of the Clone Wars which fought the Galactic Empire over the values of democracy and the rule of law.[12] Ryloth native Kaasha Bateen served as a skilled tactician with the movement, and assisted with the Pasa Novo campaign where she met Lando Calrissian. They had several steamy trysts until the Battle of Baltro, when Bateen was called back to Ryloth to help liberate the Tann Province.[9] Hera Syndulla was inspired to fight by her revolutionary father, Cham Syndulla, and joined the early rebellion against the Galactic Empire alongside Kanan Jarrus[10] after she left Ryloth with Chopper.[25] Cham continued to inspire other Ryloth revolutionaries during Hera's actions.[28] Arda Minan attempted to rally support during the Syndulla uprising, but was arrested and forced to work at the Star Whores club on Coruscant.[12]

Lyn Me's clan village was troubled by slavers until the bounty hunter Boba Fett exterminated them. Me fell in love with Fett and devoted herself to dancing, perfecting the Dance of the Twi'lek Slave Girl and eventually leaving Ryloth to pursue an entertainment career.[29]

Doctor Henrietya Antilles and Han Solo hunted for the Ryloth Ark for Maz Kanata.[30]

Hera Syndulla submitting to Thrawn on Ryloth

Hera was briefly captured by Grand Admiral Thrawn in her family home[31] during his occupation[32] and forced to submit to him. She served him on her knees while he sat in his floating command chair, the Twi'lek dutifully fellating his blue cock.[33] Hera escaped with her prized Kalikori.[31]

As of 0 BBY, the Free Ryloth movement had been suppressed, and several scions of Ryloth's leading clans were sold into slavery. Some of the Twi'lek political and cultural leaders became the property of the Hutt Five Families along the edge of the Empire, while working-class immigrants found employment in Coruscant's underlevels.[12]

Rebellion era[edit]

Oola, daughter of a chieftain of the Ryloth Clan,[19] studied at the Ryloth Dance Academy until Bib Fortuna purchased her,[8] taking the dancing girl from their homeworld to serve as a slave for Jabba Desilijic Tiure on Tatooine.[34]

Escaping from Jabba's Palace in the wake of Jabba's death, Twi'leks Nat Secura and Lyn Me used a chunk of the Hutt's spice trade to establish the Daivik Triad with Twi'lek Clan Council member Tyleah Daivik and Thora. They became the akk dogs herding Ryloth's spice trade.[2]

New Republic Era[edit]

Freed from occupation,[3] The end of the Empire afforded Ryloth a degree of liberation, though almost six thousand Twi'leks of Clan Syndulla, taken as slaves by Hutts, remained unaccounted for,[1] and the planet continued dealing in spice and slaves.[3]

Ryloth was neutral under the New Republic, situated outside of New Republic Space, though Twi'leks remained highly-placed in society. In 21 ABY, the Di Cartel, led by Rinnrivin Di, struck at the Ryloth clan mafias with help from the Amaxine warriors to take control of its spice trade. Di's soldiers decimated the Daivik Triad, and Rinnrivin acquired the holocube The Girls of Jabba's Palace. He defiled one of the Secura heiresses at the end of his gang encroachment, and made preparations to penetrate the Gaulus sector.[2] Tyleah, usurped and defiled, fled into the Bright Lands to seemingly pay penance.[7]

Lumpawaroo mated with Olla Secura in Lessu during the Diversity Alliance infiltration of Ryloth.[35][36]

Resistance Era[edit]

Zord's Spa and Bathhouse in Canto Bight, owned by Zord and run by madames Ann and Tann Gella, boasted the finest Twi'lek yobanas outside of Ryloth and the Hutt worlds.[35]

Senator Yendor organized the Ryloth Defense Authority to defy slavery and oppression, inspired by the resistance movements led by the Syndullas. He allied with General Leia Organa to face the First Order after the Battle of Crait.[1]
