The Kanji Revolt, also known as the Kanjiklub uprising, was an uprising during the gang war which consumed the Hutt Clans following the death of Jabba Desilijic Tiure on Tatooine, leading to the liberation of Hutt slaves and the birth of the Kanjiklub criminal syndicate.

Prelude[edit]

"All quiet on the Outer Rim, I'm afraid. Some stirrings among the mercenary units, the Malachor and Chrome Companies and the like, but that could be as much to do with the usual sort of Hutt vendettas that always seem to be popping up amongst the underworld scum."
―Selwyn Phasma, to Leto BorianCoruscant Call Girl

The Hutts maintained a slave trade that shamed and degraded women in the galaxy, and Hutt crime lords on worlds such as Hutta and Tatooine kept slaves in their courts to suffer degradation. The Hutt Clans became the preeminent slave merchants after the decimation of the Zygerrian Slave Empire during the Clone Wars. Many scions of Ryloth and the cultural and political leaders of the Free Ryloth movement were sold into slavery during the era of the Galactic Empire, with numerous Twi'leks ending up as slaves to Dons of the Five Families such as Arok and Gorga. Jabba, the self-styled Grand Warlord of the Outer Rim,[3] kept numerous slaves, some of whom were ill-treated by the Trandoshan torture-subcontractor Doctor Serpentis.[4]

When Jabba died, a gang war ensued[4] in the chaos after the Battle of Endor, during which beings such as Zhenya Spacestrider's mother, an Imperial officer, were enslaved. The gang war consumed the Hutt Clans, leading many slaves to be liberated.[1]

History[edit]

The uprising[edit]

During the internal gang war that consumed the Hutt Clans, the Kanjiklub uprising occurred on Nar Kanji[1] in Hutt Space, when Hutt slave enforcers rose up against the Hutt Cartel. This convulsion gave birth to the violent[5] crime syndicate Kanjiklub.[4]

A number of Hutt slaves were liberated, including Zhenya Spacestrider's mother, who was pregnant at the time of the uprising.[1] Kanjiklub also liberated slaves from the Zygerrians and Black Sun,[5] and Mos Pelgo on Tatooine saw its enslaved inhabitants overthrow Hutt Cartel rule to rename the settlement Freetown. This left Hutt slave outfits relegated to vintage status and sold as surplus.[2]

The rise of Kanjiklub[edit]

Kanjiklub's ranks were bolstered by the likes of Arica, an enforcer who rose in its ranks following Jabba's death, and Delphine Kloda, who served as a lieutenant to Tasu Leech before being forced to give up his pirate ways. The organization sought Doctor Serpentis for his treatment of Jabba's slaves, and he remained wanted by Kanjiklubbers for a long time until he was sighted among Blabba the Hutt's entourage on Berchest. Arica sent Bazine Netal to infiltrate Blabba's villa, where Netal was forced to appease Smirr Nov.[4] Zhenya Spacestrider joined Kanjiklub, but left after a dealing with Leia Organa and her allies, eventually joining Organa's Resistance.[1]

Many Hutt, Zygerrian, and Black Sun slaves freed by Kanjiklub were drawn to worlds such as Aralia, which lacked a Hutt presence as well as a Kanjiklub one, making it an attractive refuge for vulnerable beings.[5]

Behind the scenes[edit]

This event was first mentioned in Star Wars: The Force Awakens The Visual Dictionary, although was referred to only as a gang war during which the Nar Kanji colonists overthrew their Hutt overlords. The event was referred to in numerous works of erotica canon, suggested as the "Kanjiklub uprising" in "The Ways of the Force" and named the Kanji Revolt in "A Clone of His Own".
