"Over here, fellas. Drinks are on the house. Least I can do for our boys in white."
―Grottil, to FN Corps stormtroopersFurlough

Grottil was a male stormtrooper sergeant of the 501st Legion in the Galactic Empire. He fought throughout the Galactic Civil War, encountering vicious Ewoks on Endor, until he was captured by Rebels and incarcerated as a forced laborer on Concordia. Freed at the signing of the Galactic Concordance, Grottil became the Grand Krayt of an Imperial Morality Squad until his retirement, and worked as the bartender of the Old Hope, an Imp bar on Aralia. He hosted stormtroopers of the First Order's FN Corps, and allowed FN-2187 to sample his "entertainment" room, where the trooper had an intense encounter with Supanovvva.

Biography[edit]

Early career[edit]

"You know, the thing about an Ewok, he's got lifeless eyes, black eyes, like a droid's eyes. When he comes after you, he doesn't seem to be living until he bites you, and those black eyes roll over red, and then...."
―GrottilFurlough

Grottil served the Galactic Empire and joined as a stormtrooper in the 501st Legion prior to the outbreak of the Galactic Civil War, fighting alongside platoon-mates Terex and Corlac as a sergeant. He had the 501st's legendary insignia tattooed on one of his massive biceps, and was present for a speech delivered by Emperor Palpatine himself at the Imperial City Naval Base during an Empire Day speech prior to deployment to Vrogas Vas.[1]

He fought against the Rebel Alliance until he was captured during the Battle of Endor. He encountered Ewoks during the battle, and later characterized them as monsters with lifeless, red eyes, having lost his brother-in-arms, Kovacs, in the fighting.[1]

As a Rebel prisoner, Grottil spent the last months of the war as a forced laborer on a Rebel prison farm on Concordia. He considered his fate to be bad, though he felt luckier than others who didn't make it through Endor, and was released alongside other inmates after the signing of the Galactic Concordance, at a point when the remaining Imperial Starfleet withdrew into the Unknown Regions. He believed that, had he been released earlier, he would have followed the Imperial remnant after the Battle of Jakku, and mused that he could have become one of the First Order training sergeants. After the war, Grottil became the Grand Krayt of an Imperial Morality Squad on Gorse until the Calladan Standoff. He retired afterwards, moving to Aralia to open an Imp bar named the Old Hope in New Kalbria.[1]

Retirement[edit]

"You boys enjoy yourself. Just make sure you don't get too drained to get back to service... AWOL ain't something that's taken any better these days than it was when I was your age, I'd wager!"
―Grottil, to FN-2187 and ZeroesFurlough

When First Order stormtroopers of the FN Corps entered his bar during shore leave on Aralia, Grottil called them over and offered drinks on the house, having recognized their bearing despite their lack of armor. He revealed his tattoo, and told his life story to the troopers, laughing that he could have trained them himself had he been released from prison sooner. Regaling the troopers with tales of Imperial glory and power, Grottil allowed FN-2187 and Zeroes to seek out the bar's backroom attractions, and continued sharing his stories with Nines and Slip until moving on to tend to another old-timer patron.[1]

Description[edit]

"You can take the trooper out of the suit, but never the suit off the trooper. Your bearing was a dead giveaway—poise, way you took stock in the room as soon as you entered, your movements towards where your blasters would be.... Plus, your boots. Only stormtroopers wear those designs."
―Grottil, to FN Corps stormtroopersFurlough

As an elderly man, Grottil had hair the color of a Star Destroyer's hull plating, and wore it closely-trimmed. He walked with a cane in his right hand, though continued to exude enough strength to wrestle a rathtar. He had the insignia of the 501st Legion tattooed on one massive bicep. His accent distinguished him from the natives of Aralia he retired among.[1]

Personality and traits[edit]

"If I had gotten out earlier, you can bet your bottom datary I would have gone with them into the great unknown after Jakku. And in that case, I wouldn't be surprised if I would have become one of your training sergeants!"
―Grottil, to FN Corps stormtroopersFurlough

A patriotic stormtrooper of the 501st Legion, Grottil was an advocate of the Galactic Empire. He developed a fear over the Ewoks encountered on Endor, and believed he would have followed the Imperial remnant into the Unknown Regions to join the First Order. He offered free drinks to any stormtroopers who entered his Imp bar on Aralia, and recommended the attractions of his "entertainment" room, though warned troopers not to become too drained by the experience for fear of reprisal of going AWOL.[1]

Behind the scenes[edit]

Grottil first appeared in Squid Hills' Legends erotic fiction "Orphans". He was introduced into erotica canon with an appearance in "Furlough" by Das Flute, who stated the character fit the concept of his story well.[1] His character borrows elements from the unidentified stormtrooper from the Legends comic Apocalypse Endor, including mention of his platoon-mate Kovacs and his opinion of Ewoks.
