The Galactic Republic, also known as the Old Republic,[1] was a government.

Founded as the Old Republic in 25,000 BBY, it waged war with Sith, Mandalorians, and the Zygerrian Slave Empire until its fall. The Galactic Republic was formed in 1032 BBY, and governed the galaxy until Darth Sidious declared its reorganization as the Galactic Empire in 19 BBY. Even after the Republic's fall, rebels fought in opposition of the Empire, and formed the Alliance to Restore the Republic. Following victory at the Battle of Endor, the Alliance reformed as the New Republic, and made peace with the Empire a year later.

History[edit]

Before the Republic[edit]

"But as much as you might find revulsion at the thought of a Hutt purchasing Humans and participating in Human slavery, my people have been owned by Hutts since before the Old Republic existed."
Rinnrivin Di, to Carise Sindian[5]

After the dawn of the galaxy, the Force emerged as midi-chlorians spread from the Wellspring of Life. Species evolved in the galaxy.[4]

An ancient empire ruled before the rise of the Republic and the Jedi, leaving behind ruins on Rakata Prime, Kashyyyk, Dantooine, Tatooine, and Manaan.[6] These ancient conquerors from the Unknown Regions had vanished by the time of the Republic.[7] A first order of Force-worshipers was also said to have predated both Jedi and Sith before falling to ruin.[6] The Jedi Order was founded by the Prime Jedi on Ahch-To. The Hundred-Year Darkness formed the Sith.[4]

Before the dawn of the Old Republic, several species of the Si'Klaata Cluster, including Nikto, Weequay, Klatooinian, and Vodran, were virtually enslaved by the Hutts, becoming servants in their criminal enterprises.[5] Ancient pre-Republic warlord satrapies kept harems.[3]

The Old Republic[edit]

"The Rogue One operation has learned that the Starfleet is constructing an enormous kyber crystal weapon platform over Geonosis. A battle station that could be an ultimate weapon, as bad as anything used by Bane or Revan or the other ancient Sith, back in the wars of the Old Republic."
―Leia Organa[1]

The Old Republic was formed in 25,000 BBY.[4] An ancestor of Supreme Chancellor Valorum established the Senate as the Republic's representative body.[1] During the early stages of the Old Republic, Ryloth came into contact with the galactic community, though this led to Twi'lek females becoming fetishized commodities for men, and one of Ryloth's few exports.[8]

The Old Republic and the Jedi endured wars with the ancient Sith. The likes of Bane and Revan used superweapons to destroy entire planets and feed off the suffering through the Force.[1] Long before the fall of the Old Republic, the original Amaxine warriors shunned technology and fled the known galaxy in biological ships.[5] Before its fall, the Republic also battled Mandalorians and the Zygerrian Slave Empire.[4]

The Fall of the Old Republic[edit]

"Professor Huyang instructed my class about the military history of the Jedi during our Gathering ceremony—the Battles of Rashfond, the Peacekeeping of Parliock, the Great Scourge of Malachor, the fall of the Old Republic—"
"The fall of the Old Republic? Master Jedi, I may be a committed pacifist, but even I can tell that that list of accomplishments seemed to lose its luster the longer it went on."
―Obi-Wan Kenobi and Satine Kryze[2]

After the Battles of Rashfond, the Peacekeeping of Parliock, and the Great Scourge of Malachor, the Old Republic fell[2] in 1032 BBY. Although the Sith were defeated, Darth Bane established the Rule of Two to continue his lineage.[4]

Reformation[edit]

After the fall of the Old Republic, the Galactic Republic was formed, beginning the Republic Era.[4]

Expansion and stagnation[edit]

The Golden Age of the Old Republic was known for its proper high-society patrons,[7] and was a time when early Human explorers settled colony worlds and established themselves as nobles. Their descendants led the Elder Houses, with heritages on Arkanis and elsewhere.[5]

A Jedi Master was sent by the Senate to mediate an end to the Andoan Wars.[3]

The Mandalorian Civil War wracked Mandalorian society during the rule of Supreme Chancellor Kalpana, though he and his aide Silman refused to allow the Republic Diplomatic Fleet to intervene in an internal matter for Mandalore. Duchess Satine Kryze, an avowed pacifist, hoped to lead her people back into peaceful coexistence with the Republic.[2]

The Naboo crisis[edit]

Naboo was invaded by the Trade Federation in 32 BBY. Amidala used aggressive negotiations to help free her planet from the frontlines,[1] begging the Senate and the Jedi Council for help. She secured the Naboo–Gungan Peace Treaty with Boss Rugor Nass.[4] Palpatine was elected Supreme Chancellor, ushering in a brief period of political optimism during which the Novas were founded by young, reformist senators. However, the political realities of compromise, statutory limitations, and bureaucratic inertia quickly set in, and the Novas began to fade.[8]

Gunray had four trials before the Supreme Court.[1]

Separatist Crisis[edit]

Corporatist rot infected the Republic, causing a Secessionist Movement[9] as part of a Separatist Crisis in 24 BBY.[4] Many sided with Dooku in seeing the Republic as too corrupt to save, including some former Novas, while loyalists became divided over increasingly centralized power in the Chancellor's office and the military issue[8] raised by the Military Creation Act.[4]

By this time, powerful politicians met in clandestine locations like the Star Whores strip club on Level 1313, which earned an almost mythological status. Senator Amidala obtained an "employment contract" with DJ Rangthang and the Social Committee, and performed as an exotic dancer on many nights. Her employment gained Rush Clovis entry to the club, though Amidala used the opportunity to spy on his Separatist-aligned friends in the Loyalist Committee.[1]

Amidala was targeted for assassination, and was protected by her Jedi bodyguard, Anakin Skywalker, with whom she fell in love.[4]

The Clone Wars[edit]

The Clone Wars began at the Battle of Geonosis.[4]

Rumors suggested the Kaminoans created a few good clones with special sexual attributes to appease female Republic senators who would otherwise have opposed the war effort.[8] General Owell Trask and his 48th Clone Trooper Legion used genetically-engineered war massiffs as terror weapons on Republic worlds considering secession, including at the Siege of Ord Radama.[10] Clone troopers helped liberate Togruta slaves on Kadavo, and many impregnated the thankful colonists, bearing hybrid children in the months after the Republic's departure.[3]

The Republic fought the Separatist Alliance in the war. The Shadow Collective unified Black Sun, the Pyke Syndicate, the Hutt Clan, Nightbrothers, and Death Watch to present a viable third force in the conflict during the Outer Rim Sieges.[1]

Barriss Offee turned traitor to the Republic and was imprisoned for her crimes. Commander Fox inflicted sadistic torture upon the bound girl in her Coruscant prison cell as punishment.[11]

Almost three years into the war, clone trooper Kix became aware of what he believed was a glitch in the clones' inhibitor chips that caused the activation of obscure Clone Protocol Orders. However, he soon realized that it was a conspiracy that threatened the Jedi Order and the Republic itself, and went AWOL to chase leads on Coruscant. He ended up in Senator Condus DeSade's office and learned the truth about Chancellor Palpatine, but was tortured on Dooku's behalf and put in a cryo-cycle stasis pod for delivery to Serenno. His vessel, the Obrexta III, was attacked and crash-landed on Ponemah, and Kix would not awaken for another fifty years, long after his knowledge of the conspiracy was of any use.[8]

Fall of the Republic[edit]

"Well, M'Lady, this is the day when everything changes! The Jedi have fallen! The Republic has fallen!"
―Darth Vader, to Padmé Amidala[7]

Anakin fell to the dark side of the Force, becoming Darth Vader.[4] When Order 66 was enacted, many clone troopers sexually defiled female Jedi instead of killing them. Commander Bly and his troops tamed and gang-banged Aayla Secura on Felucia,[12] Stass Allie was skull-fucked on Saleucami,[13] and Luminara Unduli was bound and punished on Kashyyyk.[14] 501st Legion clone troopers cornered and fucked Serra Keto,[15] and captured and double-penetrated Shaak Ti, in the Jedi Temple.[16]

At the end of the Clone Wars, the Emperor claimed a Jedi Rebellion had been planned, and proclaimed the birth of a new Galactic Empire, ostensibly intended to reform the corrupt remnants of the Republic and the Jedi. The Republic Senate became the Imperial Senate.[1] After the fall of the Jedi and the Republic, Darth Vader forced his wife to choke on his dick, claiming that her loyalty to the Republic was a falsehood hiding her desire to acquiesce to disorder.[7] Amidala died in childbirth, and her children Luke and Leia were hidden on Tatooine and Alderaan respectively.[4]

Legacy[edit]

"Princesses dream of a lot of things. Like peace and freedom for the galaxy, and the restoration of the Republic. It doesn't mean we get what we hope for."
―Leia Organa[17]

The Republic was looked back on as the "Old Republic", a good system influenced by corrupt and decadent times.[1]

With the proclamation of the Empire, many in the galaxy saw a new dawn for the galaxy in the reformation of the corrupt remnants of the Republic, including Senator Leto Borian. However, many idealists hoping for peace and justice had their hopes dashed by atrocities, occupations, complicity in criminal activities, and ecological crises.[1] As memories of the Republic faded, some worlds far removed from the Core continued to keep slave girls under the Imperial war machine.[3]

Some constitutional forms of resistance to the Emperor remained from the Republic's era, but these were considered toothless. Republican die-hards continued operating after the Clone Wars. Anora Fair allied with a group later officially executed, but was spared that fate to work in the Star Whores club as a political prisoner. Other former Republic loyalists met in the club to discuss opposition to the Imperial regime. Leia Organa hoped to eventually restore the Republic through open rebellion against the Empire.[1] The Alliance to Restore the Republic was founded in 2 BBY.[4]

The Battle of Endor in 4 ABY secured victory for the Rebel Alliance, which reorganized into the New Republic and ushering in the New Republic Era. A Galactic Concordance was signed between the Republic and the Empire after the Battle of Jakku.[4]

Organization[edit]

Politics[edit]

"We all do our part for the Republic. I can take my pick of the finest courtesans from Coruscant to the Rose of Ryloth and the shores of Moenia. And all that is required is my life-long service to security, justice, peace, and new order."
―Mas Amedda[4]

The Senate was the Republic's venerable representative body, and leaders were required to negotiate and compromise with it. Although considered a good system, the Republic was affected by corrupt and decadent times in its final decades. Detractors believed that a more streamlined political structure was required, though others were aware that give-and-take was a part of Republic politics. The Star Whores strip club became a clandestine meeting place for those who controlled the levers of galactic politics and finance, and entry into the club was said to be a sign that one had made it in the Senate.[1] Vice Chair Mas Amedda worked at the highest echelons of Republic politics, and was privy to many secrets.[4]

Trials were held by the Supreme Court.[1] The Chancellor's office garnered increasingly centralized power during the Secessionist Movement, which divided loyalists.[8]

Foreign policy[edit]

The Republic was said to have long neglected the worlds of the Rim thanks to an non-streamlined political structure.[1] Chancellor Kalpana decreed that the Republic Diplomatic Fleet was unable to become involved in the internal Mandalorian Civil War, and two Jedi were sent instead.[2]

Defense[edit]

Barriss Offee tortured by Commander Fox as a traitor to the Republic
"Supreme Chancellor Kalpana and his senior administrative aide Silman ruled that the Republic Diplomatic Fleet could not become involved, as it was an internal Mandalorian government matter."
―Obi-Wan Kenobi, on the Mandalorian Civil WarThe Ways of the Force

The Republic Diplomatic Fleet was involved in government matters, though did not become involved in internal affairs and conflicts.[2]

Republic Military[edit]

"I was bred for a single, singular purpose. I was trained to think as part of a collective—squad, company, regiment, legion, the Army, the Republic. It's all gone now, and all because of those very things I was bred and trained to take part in. The very idea of a clone trooper deserting and falling in with a Twi'lek girl? It would never have happened in my day."
―Kix, to Reveth[8]

Clone troopers were created to serve in the Grand Army of the Republic, organized into units such as the 501st Legion.[8] The Republic was known to use terror weapons, like the genetically-engineered war massiffs that terrorized civilian populations on Republic worlds considering secession.[10]

The Republic used Devilfish submarines.[3]

The Republic Medal of Valor was awarded to the likes of Senator Borian, who sat on the Senate Military Oversight Committee.[1]

Jedi Order[edit]

"The Jedi weren't persecuted in the Old Republic."
"They weren't? Perhaps not, but neither were they trusted. As well they shouldn't. They were as corrupt as the political institution they attached themselves to."
―Ben Solo and the Master[7]

The Jedi attached themselves to the Republic, though faced persecution and distrust, especially as the Republic grew more corrupt. Luke Skywalker later concluded that this collusion helped corrupt the Jedi.[7] Jedi were dispatched to settle internal disputes that the Republic Diplomatic Fleet remained uninvolved in,[2] such as the Andoan Wars,[3] and served as watchmen for the Republic.[8]

Society and culture[edit]

The Republic was remembered by days of happy companionship. Its era was marked by golden ages and icons, and was ostentatious.[18]

Astrography[edit]

Early Human explorers of the Golden Age of the Old Republic settled colony worlds and established themselves as nobility.[5] The Old Republic brought Ryloth into the galactic community in its early stages, though this had a major impact on Twi'lek society, helping develop a patriarchy and limited accepted female positions until they were used as fetishized commodities.[8]

The Republic extended into the Rim, but was believed to neglect those worlds.[1]
